Mulch calculator

Measure the bed, pick a depth, and get bags or bulk yards. Also works for topsoil, compost, pea gravel and rubber mulch.

Handy for this job

How it works

cubic feet = area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12 × (1 + extra %) cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27 bags = cubic feet ÷ bag size, rounded up

Worked example

A 10 × 20 ft bed at 3 in deep is 200 × 3 ÷ 12 = 50 cu ft, or 1.85 cubic yards: 25 two-cubic-foot bags. With 5% extra for settling, buy 27 bags.

Tips before you buy

Bagged mulch is easier for small jobs. Past about 2–3 cubic yards (40+ bags), bulk delivery is usually cheaper even with a delivery fee. Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and house siding.

Common questions

How many bags of mulch are in a yard?

One cubic yard is 27 cu ft: 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags or 9 three-cubic-foot bags.

How deep should mulch be?

2–3 inches when topping up an existing bed, 3–4 inches for a new bed or weed control. Deeper than 4 inches can starve roots of air.

How much area does a bag of mulch cover?

A 2 cu ft bag covers about 12 sq ft at 2 in deep, 8 sq ft at 3 in or 6 sq ft at 4 in.
